Why Does Life Feel So Much Harder Financially Now?

I do not think people are imagining it when they say life feels heavier lately.

Everything just feels more stressful than it used to somehow, especially financially. Even normal everyday things now seem to come with underlying anxiety attached to them. You go to the supermarket for a few things and somehow spend far more than expected. Bills constantly creep up. Insurance renewals feel slightly terrifying. Even treating yourself to something small can suddenly come with guilt because your brain instantly starts thinking about everything else that money could have gone towards instead.

And honestly, I think a huge number of people are quietly carrying financial anxiety all the time now without really talking about it properly.

plant pot with money

Moving Made Me Notice It Even More

I noticed it even more after moving away from my home in the Highlands. Back home, life felt slower somehow. Simpler mentally in certain ways. Since moving, everything feels faster, more expensive and far more online all at the same time, which honestly feels like the worst possible combination for your mental health.

Because now you are not only dealing with real financial pressure in everyday life, you are also constantly seeing everybody else online appearing to live perfectly while you are trying to work out why a basic food shop suddenly costs so much.

Social Media Has Changed What “Normal” Looks Like

That is the strange thing about social media. You can be completely fine one minute, then scroll online for ten minutes and suddenly feel like everybody your age owns a beautiful house, travels constantly, has endless disposable income and somehow has their entire life sorted out financially.

Meanwhile most normal people are sitting there trying to budget properly, worrying about bills in the background and wondering how everything became so expensive overnight.

I honestly think social media has completely distorted what normal life looks like now.

Nobody really posts:

  • the overdrafts
  • the financial stress
  • the panic over unexpected bills
  • the sleepless nights
  • the second jobs
  • the anxiety about money

You mostly just see the polished version.

And when you are already stressed about money yourself, constantly consuming everybody else’s highlight reels can quietly make you feel like you are failing even when you are actually doing okay.

The Pressure To Constantly Earn More

I also think modern life now comes with this exhausting pressure to constantly improve yourself financially at all times.

Earn more money.
Start a side hustle.
Monetise your hobbies.
Invest better.
Save harder.
Be more productive.

Honestly, it becomes mentally draining after a while.

Especially because life is already difficult enough without feeling like you should somehow also be optimising every second of your existence too.

As somebody who works online, I definitely notice this more because your phone never really lets you switch off from comparison. There is always somebody earning more, doing better, travelling more, buying more or appearing more successful online.

It never ends.

Why Financial Anxiety Feels So Exhausting

I honestly think money anxiety affects people far more deeply than we admit sometimes because it quietly follows you everywhere in the background.

It affects sleep.
Stress levels.
Confidence.
Relationships.
Your ability to relax properly.

Even on good days, there is often still this low level worry sitting underneath everything.

And because so many people are struggling financially now in some way, it almost becomes normalised. People joke about being broke or burnt out because humour feels easier than admitting how overwhelming life sometimes feels.

The Older I Get, The More I Value Simple Things

The older I get, the more I realise I crave simple things now more than constant pressure and perfection.

Quiet mornings.
Walking Mylo.
Getting outside.
Feeling calm.
Spending less time online.
Not feeling like my entire worth is tied to productivity or money all the time.

Those things feel far more important to me now than pretending everything is perfect online.

Final Thoughts

I genuinely think far more people are financially stressed, mentally overwhelmed and exhausted than anybody properly admits online.

Life feels expensive.
The world feels uncertain.
And social media often makes it seem like everybody else is coping better than you are.

But honestly, if you have been feeling anxious about money or struggling with the pressure of keeping up lately, I really do not think you are alone.

Why Social Media Is Making So Many People Feel Behind In Life

I do not think humans were ever supposed to know this much about everybody else’s lives all the time.

Sometimes I genuinely think that is why so many people feel anxious, overwhelmed and like they are somehow failing lately, because the second we wake up in the morning we are immediately hit with hundreds of other people’s lives before we have even had a coffee.

And honestly, I catch myself doing it too without even realising sometimes.

designer house with pool

You open Instagram for five minutes and suddenly somebody your age has renovated a beautiful house, started a business, gone on three holidays, perfected their Pilates routine, drinks green juice every morning and somehow still looks calm and emotionally stable through all of it.

Meanwhile I am sitting there trying to remember if I actually replied to an email from two days ago while reheating the same cup of coffee for the third time.

Social Media Has Changed What “Normal” Looks Like

I think social media has completely changed what normal life looks like in our heads.

Years ago, you mostly compared yourself to people physically around you. Your school friends, neighbours, work colleagues and people living relatively similar lives to your own.

Now we compare ourselves to influencers, celebrities and strangers online from all over the world constantly without even thinking about it.

And because people mostly post the best parts of life online, your brain slowly starts believing everybody else is happier, richer, more successful, more attractive and more together than you are.

Even when logically you know social media is curated, it still affects you mentally after a while.

Moving Away Made Me Notice It Even More

I noticed this even more after moving away from the Highlands.

Back home, life felt slower somehow. There was less pressure to constantly perform all the time. More nature. More space. More real life and less feeling like everything needed documenting or proving online.

Since moving and working mostly online, I think I have realised just how much time people spend consuming everybody else’s lives instead of properly living their own.

And the strange thing is, social media never really lets your brain rest either.

There is always somebody doing better.
Travelling more.
Looking better.
Achieving more.
Earning more.
Living in a nicer house.
Having a more exciting life.

There is no finish line to comparison anymore because the internet gives you unlimited people to compare yourself against forever.

The Pressure To Have Life Figured Out

I honestly think that is why so many people quietly feel behind in life now even when they are actually doing completely okay.

There is also this weird invisible timeline online that makes people feel like they should have everything sorted by a certain age.

The perfect relationship.
The house.
The career.
The confidence.
The money.
The perfect friendship group.
The perfect body.
The perfect life.

And if your life does not match that exact timeline, it can genuinely make you feel like you are doing something wrong. I have definitely felt that pressure myself at times, especially after moving somewhere new and starting over in a lot of ways. Social media can make everybody else’s lives look incredibly full while you are sitting there feeling slightly disconnected trying to work out where you fit again.

Nobody Posts The Hard Parts Properly

But honestly? I think far more people feel lonely, uncertain and overwhelmed than anybody properly admits online. Most people are just posting the polished version.

Nobody really shows:

  • the anxiety
  • the loneliness
  • the burnout
  • the financial stress
  • the self doubt
  • the evenings spent scrolling feeling completely unproductive
  • the moments where they feel lost

Those parts rarely make it onto Instagram.

Why Social Media Feels So Mentally Exhausting

I also think social media has quietly made it difficult for people to feel content with normal life anymore.

There is always pressure to improve yourself constantly.

Look better.
Do more.
Achieve more.
Optimise more.

Even hobbies feel performative now.

Walking becomes step goals.
Skincare becomes anti ageing.
Working out becomes aesthetics.
Holidays become content.

Everything feels slightly monetised and measured.

And honestly, I think people are exhausted from trying to keep up with an impossible standard nobody can realistically maintain all the time.

Final Thoughts

The older I get, the more I value people who feel real.

The people who disappear offline sometimes.
The people who admit life is messy.
The people who are not constantly trying to look perfect all the time.

Because real life is messy.

Most of us are just trying to do our best while quietly figuring things out as we go.

I genuinely think social media has made a lot of people feel like they are behind in life when actually they are just living normal human lives.

And honestly, if you have been feeling like that lately too, I really do not think you are alone.

Is It Normal To Feel Lost in Your 20s? Let’s Be Honest

I don’t think people talk about this enough, but your 20s can feel… really confusing.

One minute you feel like you should have everything figured out, and the next you’re questioning absolutely everything. Your job, your friendships, where you live, what you even want your life to look like.
And the worst part? It can feel like everyone else has it sorted while you’re just trying to keep up.

So let’s actually talk about it properly.

Quick Answer

Yes, it is completely normal to feel lost in your 20s. Most people experience uncertainty during this time because it’s a period of major life changes, pressure, and self-discovery.

Why Do So Many People Feel Lost in Their 20s?

Your 20s are one of the biggest transition periods in your life.

You go from education into the “real world”, and suddenly you’re expected to make decisions about your career, finances, relationships and future, often all at once.

There’s no clear path, and no one really tells you that.

At the same time, there’s a lot of pressure to succeed early. You see people getting promotions, buying houses, travelling, or starting businesses, and it creates this feeling that you should be doing the same.

There’s even been more talk about something called a “quarter-life crisis”, where people in their 20s feel unsure about their career, relationships and direction in life, which makes a lot of this feel even more common than people admit.

But in reality, everyone is moving at completely different speeds.

Signs You Might Be Feeling Lost in Your 20s

You might not always describe it as “feeling lost”, but it can show up in different ways:
  • Constantly questioning your career or life direction
  • Feeling behind compared to other people your age
  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Wanting change but not knowing what that looks like
  • Overthinking every decision, even small ones
  • Feeling unmotivated or stuck
Even one or two of these is enough to make you feel unsettled.

The Bit No One Really Admits

Feeling lost doesn’t mean you’re failing.

If anything, it usually means you’re becoming more aware of what you actually want, and what you don’t.

A lot of people stay in jobs, relationships or routines that don’t suit them because it feels easier than questioning things.

So if you are questioning things, that’s not a bad place to be, even if it feels uncomfortable.

You’re allowed to change your mind.
You’re allowed to outgrow people and situations.

You’re allowed to not have everything mapped out yet.

What Actually Helps When You Feel Lost

This is the part people want answers for, and I’ll be honest, there isn’t one fix.

But there are things that genuinely make a difference.

1. Focus on the next step, not your whole life

Trying to plan everything at once is overwhelming. It’s much easier to focus on what feels right right now.

2. Stop comparing your timeline to everyone else’s

Social media highlights the best bits, not the confusion behind them. You’re not behind, you’re just on a different path.

3. Pay attention to what drains you and what gives you energy

This is one of the easiest ways to figure out direction without overthinking it.

4. Accept that uncertainty is part of growth

This stage feels uncomfortable because things are shifting. That’s usually a sign something is changing, even if you can’t see it yet.

5. Talk about it more

Once you start talking honestly, you realise how many other people feel the same way.

Can Feeling Lost in Your 20s Be a Good Thing?

It doesn’t feel like it at the time, but yes, it can be.

This is usually the point where people start making more intentional choices instead of just following what they think they “should” do.

It’s often the beginning of figuring out what actually suits you.

FAQ

How long does feeling lost in your 20s last?
It’s different for everyone. It can come and go in phases rather than being one constant feeling.

Is it normal to have no direction in your 20s?
Yes. Many people don’t have a clear direction at this stage, even if it looks like they do.

What should I do if I feel stuck in life?
Start small. Focus on one area you’d like to improve and take a small step forward rather than trying to fix everything at once.

Does everyone feel like this in their 20s?

Not everyone talks about it, but a large number of people experience some level of uncertainty during this time.

Final Thoughts

If you feel lost right now, you’re not behind, and you’re definitely not the only one.

You’re just in a stage where things are shifting, and that’s uncomfortable, but it’s also where things start to change.

And even if it doesn’t feel like it yet, you will figure it out in your own time.

How To Tell Whether It's Time To Get A Body Piercing

How do you know it's the right time to get a body piercing? Well, in this guide, you are about to find out. We look through some of the life situations and circumstances that might mean the time is right for you to take the next step and really start experimenting.

You've wanted it consistently for a long time

If you wanted a body piercing consistently for a long time, then it's a sign that you might want to go through with it. It's a big green light. If it's a preference that has lasted several months or even years.

Many people get body piercings on a whim and then regret it later. But if this is a feature of your life and something that you're thinking about regularly, then perhaps it is deeply ingrained in who you are and part of your identity.

You've researched specific piercings thoroughly

Another sign that it's time for you to get a body piercing is if you've researched different types of piercings thoroughly. For example, you might have explored a helix jewelry collection and found all sorts of options for the specific piercing you want. So be well aware of aftercare needs, the risk of rejection, and healing time. For example, if you pierce the cartilage, healing time is usually 4 months or more. For the navel, it can be up to 6 to 12 months.

Your health and lifestyle are in a good place right now

It might also be a good time to get a body piercing if your health and lifestyle are in a good place right now. Being healthy before you go into it makes it easier to deal with the aftercare commitment.

Alternatively, if you're sick, stressed out or on blood thinners, then it might not be a good idea to get a piercing. These conditions, along with things like heavy activity and swimming, can complicate healing. Also be sure that you don't have any skin allergies or dermatitis in the region around the piercing. Again, this can make healing more challenging.

You've tested the waters

If you've tested the waters and liked it, then that's also a good sign that you might want to get a body piercing. Many people experiment with fake or clip-on versions of the jewelry they want before going to the piercing salon. Another thing you might have done is Photoshop the piercing onto your body or hold up the specific piece of jewelry that you want to attach to the specific spot while looking in the mirror. If you like the way it looks, then it could be a good sign that you want to go ahead.

You’re mentally ready for it

Finally, you want to be mentally ready for your piercing. During the piercing process, there's sometimes a bit of brief pain, even though most piercing professionals now use topical numbing agents. You'll also need to get ready for the soreness, itching, and swelling that often occurs in the immediate aftermath of the piercing.

6 Reasons To Buy A Premium Model Vehicle

Most car manufacturers offer a range of price points for each vehicle model in their catalog. The reason for this is twofold. First, customers want choices, but also it means that they can invest more in R&D.

For many consumers, though, the idea of purchasing a premium model seems dumb. Why would you pay extra when you can get a basic vehicle for less?

That’s the question we explore in this post. We see why you might want to spend more and how it could make sense in some circumstances.

More Advanced Safety Features

The main reason buyers upgrade is that they can often get more advanced safety features when they opt for premium models. Manufacturers are much more likely to include things like emergency braking and self-driving suites on the high end than on the low end.

Buyers like this because of the peace of mind. They know that if they opt for the better model, they and their family have a higher chance of being protected in the event of an accident.

Superior Build Quality

Another perk is the superior build quality. It’s just so much higher in premium vehicles than in those where the manufacturer has tried to cut as many costs as possible.

Just look at premium SEAT used cars. The interiors and exteriors both offer far superior quality.

Better Comfort

If you’re the sort of person who drives long distances regularly, then comfort is another reason to choose a premium model. These vehicles offer more luxurious interiors and legroom so you can stretch out.

Many vehicles these days claim to have a spa-like experience. We wouldn’t go that far, but it is true that manufacturers have massively improved their game and changed how they build out cabins. Now, many of them really have a premium feel, even if the vehicle as a whole is less expensive.

Better Handling

When you’re on the road all the time, you also want more power and better handling. These capabilities enable you to navigate traffic more successfully, which comes in handy more than you might think.

On paper, a regular engine and speed seem okay. But when you get out into the real world, you soon see the benefits of taking it to the next level. You can almost do what you want on the road and get out of sticky situations.

Cutting-Edge Tech

The top-of-the-range trims and vehicle models also come with the best tech upgrades. These give you touchscreens, over-the-air updates, and AI assistants.

The best tech is something that usually comes as optional extras, so you can sometimes add it independently of the trim. It depends on what the manufacturer offers.

Also, many manufacturers offer top tech as standard on their new models, so always do your research.

Greater Resale Value

Finally, high-end vehicle models tend to depreciate more slowly than their low-end counterparts. As such, you’ll often find that they have more resale value, especially inside the first five years. Buyers love the idea that they can drive a premium vehicle at a discount.

3 Ways To Update Your Home's Exterior

The outside of your home deserves as much time and effort as the inside, and you should put the work into making sure it looks nice. At some point, that could mean you’ll need to update your home’s exterior. As overwhelming as that sounds, it’s much easier than you could think.

All you might need is to focus on a few particular areas. Repairs are a given, but it’s worth going a little beyond that. Three specific strategies could help with this more than you’d think, as they’re easy to do, despite the impact they’ll have.

If you want to make the outside of your home look nicer, they’ll be more than worth the effort.

Update Your Home's Exterior: 3 Top Strategies

1. Improve Lighting

You’ll already know to look after the lights inside your home, but it’s not uncommon to overlook the ones on the outside. For many people, there wouldn’t even be any of these. That could be something to work on, as it can have more of an impact on your home’s curb appeal than you’d expect.

It’ll illuminate nicer parts of your home while also keeping your house safer at night time. With a little bit of time and effort, you’ll have no problem lighting up the nice parts of your house.

2. Add Some Stone

Sometimes, updating your home’s exterior is as simple as making a few quick and easy renovations and improvements. One of the more notable of these is to add some stonework to various places. You shouldn’t have to spend a lot of money on this, with the likes of reclaimed yorkstone being relatively affordable.

While you’ll need to spend a little money on the contractor, it shouldn’t be as expensive as you might’ve thought. It’ll also be more than worth the investment because of the visual impact it’ll have on your property.

3. Power Wash The Exterior

One of the quickest and easiest ways to update your home’s exterior is to give it a good clean. While that seems like a lot of work, it’s quite easy if you decide to power wash it. Once you have the tools you need, all you’ll need to do is spend a little time and effort actually doing it.

The power washer removes the built-up dirt and grime much faster than you’d think. Your outside walls, patio, and similar areas can all benefit from this. Even a short afternoon working on this could work wonders on your home’s appearance.

Update Your Home's Exterior: Wrapping Up

If you want to update your home’s exterior, you might assume it’ll take a lot of time and effort. It shouldn’t have to. Outside of basic repairs, there are more than a few ways you can make the outside of your home look nicer.

Power washing the walls and other areas, improving the lighting, and adding some stone are all some of the more notable of these. They’ll make more of a difference than you’d think, despite how seemingly minor they’ll be.
