Should You Move Your Possessions Yourself?

When moving home, you have two options for transporting your possessions: hire a moving company or move them yourself. Both have their pros and cons. This guide can help you to choose the best option for you.

What’s your budget?

Hiring professional movers is the more expensive option. If you’re on a very tight budget, it may make sense to save money by handling the move yourself.

That said, you need to consider whether you have the right vehicle for the job. Hiring a van can be expensive - if you’re hiring it for several days, it could work out more expensive than using a moving company. Knowing someone with a van who can lend you it to you could be a great help as it could reduce van hire fees.

How much possessions have you got to move?

If you’ve got lots of possessions to move, you’re going to want a team of people to help you - otherwise it’s going to take a long time.

Hiring professional movers can have its benefits when there are lots of possessions. Not only are professional movers more likely to be able to carry your possession in and out more speedily, but they’ll likely own a truck that will allow them to handle the move in less journeys. If you’ve got a tight deadline, it may make sense to hire professional movers.

What other commitments have you got?

If you’ve got a full-time job, kids and pets, it can be difficult to free up all of these commitments in order to focus on the move. Hiring a moving company could allow you to still look after kids without hiring a babysitter or even check in on work.

Of course, if you have no commitments, you may have all the time you need to handle the move yourself.

What type of possessions are you moving?

You should also consider the types of possessions you have to move. When it comes to items such as pianos, it might make sense to search for piano moving near me - pianos are notoriously difficult to move in and out of properties. If you have lots of fragile or valuable items, you should also consider whether hiring a professional mover would be more sensible as you don’t want these items to get damaged.

If it’s largely basic possessions that you’re moving then you may not have to worry too much about hiring professionals. There’s always a risk that something could get damaged or lost, but the risk may not be so severe.

How accessible is each property?

Access is a big factor to consider too. If your home is fairly open, has few stairs and has large entrances, you may be able to handle the move easily yourself without damaging your possessions or either property. If you live in an upper floor apartment with tight corridors and tight doorways, then moving your stuff could be a nightmare and you may benefit from hiring professional movers. Some professional companies will be able to dismantle and reassemble items for you and even use cranes if necessary.
